Long before modern Bandung existed, the land was shaped by fire, love, and a tragic mistake.

Tangkuban Perahu, meaning “Upside-Down Boat” in Indonesian, is one of West Java’s most iconic volcanoes. Its name comes from an ancient Sundanese legend that has been passed down for generations.

According to the legend, a beautiful woman named Dayang Sumbi unknowingly fell in love with her own son, Sangkuriang, who had grown into a powerful young man after being separated from her as a child. When Dayang Sumbi realized the truth, she desperately tried to stop the marriage.

She set an impossible condition: Sangkuriang had to build a massive boat and create a lake, all in a single night.

Using supernatural powers, Sangkuriang almost succeeded. Terrified that her secret would be revealed, Dayang Sumbi tricked him by creating the illusion of sunrise. Enraged by the deception, Sangkuriang kicked the unfinished boat, flipping it upside down.

That overturned boat is believed to have transformed into Mount Tangkuban Perahu.
